BAIBAKOV art projects hosted the global launch of VISIONAIRE 59 FAIRYTALE with a one-night-only event at the Dom Spiridonova mansion in Moscow, Russia, featuring a reading by actress Alisa Khazanova of a selection of fairytales by Karen Kilimnik & Kirsten Dunst and Viktor & Rolf. This is the first time Visionaire was presented in Russia.
Inspired by the Russian avant-garde and its experiments with synesthesia, BAIBAKOV art projects transformed Dom Spiridonova into a fairytale setting for this unique occasion. The two organizations have assembled an eminent group of collaborators to conjure the spirit of VISIONAIRE 59 FAIRYTALE by turning the mansion into a multisensory fusion of architecture, sound art and costume design. For the event, architect Katya Bochavar infused the mansion’s palatial interior with a mix of pre- and post-Soviet furniture, further punctuated with live sculptures based on Roman Ermakov’s costume design. Sound artist Oleg Makarov collaborated with composer Peter Aidu to create a soundscape for the space.

BAIBAKOV art projects announces the next stage in its international program, which promotes Russian contemporary art abroad. BAIBAKOV art projects and Maria Baibakova are proud to present a showcase of works by Olga Chernysheva as part of GOGOLFEST, a multidisciplinary festival held in Kiev’s famous Dovzhenko Film Studios from September 4–12. Chernysheva is one of the most eloquent and important artists working in Russia today. Her work explores the possibility of a silent film to speak volumes, of how the fall of an Empire can be expressed in the simple, seemingly meaningless gestures of her subjects. Within the space of the film studios, viewers feel the contrast between the produced theatricality of their surroundings and the understated observations of Chernysheva’s camera, amplifying the impact of the works.

Installed at BAIBAKOV art projects’ exhibition space on Paveletskaya Naberezhnaya, 032c WORKSHOP REPORT #1 (MOSCOW) was co- curated by Joerg Koch, founder and editor of 032c, and Maria Baibakova, the show brought together works by Yakov Chernikhov, Cyprien Gaillard, Konstantin Grcic, Carsten Höller, Missoni, Rick Owens, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Slavs and Tatars and Andro Wekua.

Perpetual Battles is a group exhibition that considered the creative potential of conflict, engaging artists who actively isolate, investigate, and aggravate the violence underlying the everyday experience of contemporary society.
Co-curated by Maria Baibakova, Kate Sutton and Jean-Max Colard, Perpetual Battles featured new works and site-specific commissions by Adel Abdessemed, Saadane Afif, Wilfrid Almendra, Latifa Echakhch, Claire Fontaine, Cyprien Gaillard, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Thomas Hirschhorn, Oscar Tuazon, Ida Tursic and Wilfried Mille, and Raphael Zarka.

BAIBAKOV art projects presented the first solo exhibition of American artist Paul Pfeiffer in Russia. For this site-specific project, the artist developed on his critique of the spectacle, converting the unique space of the former Red October Chocolate Factory into a “Perspective Machine.”

As a Special Guest of the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, Luc Tuymans presented his first major exhibition in Russia, “Against the Day”, the fourth exhibition from BAIBAKOV art projects. For this show, the artist drew his subject matter from sources as diverse as video games, reality television shows and cell phone photography.

BAIBAKOV art projects brought together recent works by Olga Chernysheva, a Special Guest of the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art. Curated by Boris Groys, "Present Past" continues the artist's persistent investigation into the psychological state of her subjects. The exhibition featured photographs from the series the Guards (2009) and The Cactus Seller (2009), as well as the video works, Untitled, Dedicated to Sengai (2008), and L'intermittence du Coeur (2010).

BAIBAKOV art projects’ third exhibition at the Red October Chocolate Factory explored the work of five internationally recognised American artists: Walead Beshty, Matthew Brannon, Wade Guyton, Sterling Ruby, and Kelley Walker (with a special, “sixth” intervention by Guyton \ Walker). The exhibition considered the contemporary relevance of these artists, while establishing their work within the context of a specifically American artistic lineage, rooted in the moment of American Modernism. The exhibition was accompanied by the “Original Five,” a special short-run exhibition combining works by Robert Indiana, Donald Judd, Ed Ruscha, Richard Serra and Andy Warhol.

“Natural Wonders: New Art from London” captured the energy, vitality and diversity of practice of over twenty artists who have recently taken centre stage in London. The second exhibition to be presented by BAIBAKOV art projects, “Natural Wonders” included contributions from London-based artists: Diann Bauer, David Birkin, Tim Braden, Justin Coombes, CutUp, Shezad Dawood, Edward Fornieles, Eloise Fornieles, Ryan Gander, Margarita Gluzberg, James Hopkins, Mustafa Hulusi, John Isaacs, Idris Khan, Kirk Palmer, Nathaniel Rackowe, Barry Reigate, Conrad Shawcross, Gary Webb, Nicole Wermers, Douglas White, and Toby Ziegler.

“invasion : evasion” challenged selected artists to launch a creative invasion of the grand halls and columned corridors of the former Red October Chocolate Factory, with a series of site-specific commissions. Curated by Maria Baibakova and Kate Sutton, the exhibition included 22 artists and artists groups, previously based or currently working in Russia: ABC Group, Katya Bochavar, Olga Bozhko, Dmitry Bulnygin, Alexei Buldakov, Alina Gutkina, July Zhdanova, Dmitry and Elena Kawarga, Lyuda Konstantinova, Ira Korina, Masha Koshenskova, Dasha Krotova, Misha Most, Konstantin Novikov, Gosha Ostretsov, PG Group, Ivan Plusch, Maksim Svishev, Veronica Smirnoff, Rostan Tavasiev, Dmitry Teselkin, and Valery Chtak.
